The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is dramatically expanding its ability to test DNA samples with the purchase of three robotic analyzers, replacing a time-consuming process that today is performed mostly by hand.
The robots can test samples far faster than humans. When the state of Florida, for instance, bought its first robotic analyzers in 1986, a technician could hand-test about 80 samples in a week. The robots, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, could test more than 180 samples a day.
The Florida department was one of the first crime labs in the nation to get the robots.
