I appreciate this as an example of how the story of a person lives on after the person's demise. It was a person who knew her and a police officer who have kept the story alive, and also someone in public office. They remind us that the story continues. How it ended is yet to be written.

Alexandra Wiwcharuk Murder

Show police possible evidence compiled over years of research

Nieces pursue tips in 1962 Wiwcharuk murder
Since four sisters went public with their pursuit of the person who brutally raped and killed their aunt 47 years ago, the siblings have amassed 25 thick binders of tips, leads, e-mails and interviews.

Alexandra Wiwcharuk, a 23-year-old beauty queen and nurse, was murdered in Saskatoon in May 1962. She was last seen May 18 and found May 31 buried by the riverbank.

Three of Wiwcharuk's nieces were in Saskatoon Friday meeting with police and following tips from the public, and each carried a couple bags of possible evidence.

"The police were quite interested and excited," said Lynn Gratix, who was with her two sisters, Lorain Phillips and Patty Storie. A fourth sister, Gwen Taralson, did not make the trip.

They brought new names and scenarios to the police, along with a new DNA sample of a possible suspect.

One tip led the sisters to the son of a prominent family and his tumultuous past with Wiwcharuk, but they wouldn't elaborate on details.

Four possible suspects have been whittled away from the hundreds of e-mails and phone calls received by the sisters through the website www.alexandrawiwcharuk.net and their 1-866-794-1962 hotline.

"We've narrowed down (the suspects') stories to everything that revolves around their lives -- where they eat, drink and sleep," said Gratix.

An autopsy determined Wiwcharuk was raped and was still alive when she was buried, ultimately choking to death. Her skull was broken, her face was bludgeoned and her windpipe clogged with sand and dirt.

The sisters are keeping details of their investigation vague at the request of the police, who say any leak could compromise their own cold case investigation.

The sisters have spent two years travelling the country to confirm tips and meet their aunt's friends and co-workers.

They need solid information from trustworthy sources because a wrong fact could jeopardize the investigation.

"Our integrity is in question then, and we can't afford that," said Storie. "We're not playing around. This isn't a game."

Wiwcharuk's former co-worker met with the sisters and told them she still cries about the night of the murder.

"She just said, 'I can't believe my friend was getting murdered a block away from me,' " said Storie.
